
James Thurman is a retired naval aviator, aerospace engineer, systems engineer, aircraft owner, and entrepreneur. As the founder and CEO of Portal Aircraft Company (PAC), he is leading the development of next-generation VTOL and autonomous aerial systems, bringing together operational experience, engineering innovation, and a passion for redefining the future of flight.
James served as both a pilot and Tomahawk cruise missile flight controller in the United States Navy, where he developed firsthand expertise in high-tempo flight operations, mission planning, and the rigorous demands of operational aviation while executing combat operations in Iraq and Libya. He also served as a professor of aerospace engineering at both the United States Naval Academy and the University of Texas at Arlington, teaching and mentoring the next generation of engineers and military leaders. His background uniquely bridges tactical aviation, advanced aeronautical research, and entrepreneurial execution.
